Breaking Barriers: Expanding Affordable Housing Through Manufactured Home Innovation – 08/25/2026 Weekly Mortgage Update Segment

Hi, I’m Adam DeSanctis with The Mortgage Minute, the latest news from the Mortgage Bankers Association. MBA recently sent a letter to HUD supporting its proposal to remove the permanent chassis requirement for upper floor sections of multi-story manufactured homes. While the proposal addresses construction standards, we support it because reducing unnecessary regulatory barriers can expand the availability of affordable manufactured housing and create more opportunities for lenders to finance innovative designs. Modernizing these requirements can help reduce construction costs, encourage innovation, and facilitate new manufactured housing options, including infill and higher density development. Importantly, the recently enacted 21st Century Road to Housing Act goes even further by establishing a framework that can accommodate a broader range of manufactured housing designs, including homes built without a permanent chassis. MBA will remain engaged as HUD implements these reforms and will continue advocating for financing, appraisal, and secondary market policies that help turn manufacturing innovation into sustainable lending opportunities. That’s it for this week. Thank you for listening.
