FEMA Flood Insurance Changes: What’s at Stake for Mortgage Lenders? – 11/03/2026 Weekly Mortgage Update Segment

Hi, I’m Adam DeSanctis with the Mortgage Minute, the latest news from the Mortgage Bankers Association. Last week, FEMA issued a request for information seeking stakeholder feedback on potential changes to the National Flood Insurance Program. The agency is looking at a wide range of issues, including flood mapping and risk data, program operations, automation, customer service, and opportunities to improve coordination with state and local governments and private sector partners. The RFI matters because potential changes to the NFIP could have meaningful implications for the real estate finance industry, particularly how flood risk is identified, communicated, insured, and incorporated into lending and risk management decisions. MBA is reviewing the RFI and welcomes member feedback to help inform its response. Comments are due December 10th. And finally, and an important reminder, Tuesday is election day with significant midterm elections taking place across the country. Regardless of your political affiliation or which candidates you support, make your voice heard and vote. The one hundred and twentieth Congress will look to address important real estate-related issues next year on affordability and availability, including potential legislation that will shape the future of our industry. Make sure you have a say in who represents you. And like I always say, if you don’t vote, you can’t complain. That’s it for this week. Thank you for listening.
