MBA’s New Housing Affordability Roadmap: Lowering Mortgage Costs Without Loosening Lending Standards – 10/20/2026 Weekly Mortgage Update Segment

Hi, I’m Adam DeSanctis with the Mortgage Minute, the latest news from the Mortgage Bankers Association. Last week at MBA Annual in Chicago, MBA released a new white paper, Affordability in Action: A Policy Roadmap to Lower the Cost of Financing a Home to Own or Rent. The paper outlines practical, administrative, and regulatory steps policymakers can take now to lower housing costs without major legislative overhauls. The recommendations focus on reducing upfront closing costs and monthly mortgage payments, expanding access to responsible credit, lowering the cost of building and financing rental housing, and increasing housing supply. Specific proposals include reducing GSE credit reporting and loan-level pricing costs, responsibly lowering FHA mortgage insurance premiums, streamlining mortgage regulations, and modernizing FHA lending programs. As MBA President and CEO Bob Broeksmit said, “These are focused steps policymakers can take now to reduce unnecessary costs, expand access to responsible credit, and support more housing development. The goal isn’t looser lending standards. It’s a more efficient housing finance system that makes homeownership and rental housing more affordable.” MBA will continue working with policymakers to advance these recommendations through administrative and regulatory action. That’s it for this week. Thank you for listening.
