Brian Montgomery previously served as the Deputy Secretary for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and managed the day-to-day operations of the agency and assisted the Secretary in leading its 8,000 employees. Montgomery was nominated by the President in October 2019 and confirmed by the U.S. Senate in May 2020.
Montgomery previously served as the Assistant Secretary for Housing/Federal Housing Commissioner. Nominated by the President in September 2017, his confirmation marks the first time an individual has served as head of the FHA twice, and under three different Administrations.
With over 30 years of public/private sector experience, including his first term as Commissioner from 2005 to 2009, Montgomery brings to HUD a deep knowledge of housing issues and vast experience spearheading large-scale policy initiatives.
As FHA Commissioner, Montgomery was responsible for the management of FHA’s $1.3 trillion mortgage insurance portfolio, which includes its Single Family, Multifamily, and Health Care programs. He also directed HUD’s project-based Section 8 rental assistance housing program, the Office of Housing Counseling, and HUD’s Manufactured Housing Program.
In addition to his first term as FHA Commissioner, Montgomery’s government experience includes serving as Deputy Assistant to President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2005, including serving as Secretary of the Cabinet from 2003 to 2005.
in 2003, Montgomery was appointed as the White House point of contact for the space shuttle Columbia accident investigation. For the effort, Montgomery was awarded the NASA Exceptional Service Medal. While serving in the Executive Office of the President, Montgomery was one of a handful of White House staff traveling with President George W. Bush on September 11, 2001.
A Texas native, Montgomery holds a BA in Political Science from the University of Houston and attended the University of Texas at Austin.
