Protecting Borrower Privacy: The Push to Reform Trigger Leads – 5/05/2025 Weekly Mortgage Update segment

Hi, I’m Adam DeSanctis. This is The Mortgage Minute, the latest news from the Mortgage Bankers Association. Last month during MBA’s National Advocacy Conference and in direct response to our industry leading advocacy efforts, representatives Rose and Torres and Senators Haggerty and Reed reintroduce the Home Buyer’s Privacy Protection Act for the hundred 19th Congress. The bill is virtually identical to last year in that it limits the use of mortgage trigger leads to the borrower’s current servicer, loan originator, and depository account holder. In other words, it’s those with an existing relationship in the ability to make a firm offer of credit. Now, the good news, the bill took a big step forward last week where it was noticed at a house Financial Services subcommittee hearing. This means that the bill is poised for an upcoming committee markup where the bill will be debated and voted on. MBA has already begun a full court press to convince committee members to pass our bill and send it to the full house for a vote. We’re hearing that a markup session could happen later this month just before Memorial Day. If you haven’t already, join the Mortgage Action Alliance. Call to action and tell your elected officials to co-sponsor and push for swift action on the House and Senate companion bills. Go to mba.org/ma to act. And finally, I hope you’re joining us at MBA Secondary and Capital Markets conference taking place in the big Apple, New York City on May 18th through the 21st. Register today at mba.org/secondary. That’s it for this week. Thank you for listening.
